Cruising for just an hour or two on the Grand Canal, you’ll travel through 250 years of history: through locks, bridges and aqueduct, through tales of great engineers and merchants plying their trade. The landed gentry, poor folk escaping the Great Famine, heavy horses pulling their cargoes – all have left their legacies here.
Beginning in Sallins, The skippered traditional canal barge trips through beautiful Kildare countryside stir so many stories to life. While ducks and swans swim, and kingfishers and dragonflies dart; while you take the helm or relax with a drink; while you glide through time…
LEINSTER AQUEDUCT CRUISE – 1 HOUR
The short barge trip to the Leinster Aqueduct is suitable for all ages. There's a stop on top of the Aqueduct where you'll learn a little about the history of this impressive structure and of the Grand Canal.
Sallins is where trade on the Grand Canal first began when passenger and cargo barges started hauling their horse drawn loads between the small Kildare village and Dublin in 1780. 3 years later the Company passed their first major obstacle - crossing over the Liffey.
Our barge is a lovingly restored traditional canal barge with on-board bar service that is licensed to carry 12 passengers. With lunch-time departures at 1 pm and 2.15 pm and 3.30 pm you can combine your cruise with a meal in one of the water-front restaurants in Sallins before or after your cruise.
Today Sallins is a bustling inland harbor village with 4 award winning restaurants & bars on the waterfront, and an array of boats, barges, houseboats and a brewery. It is 30 mins from Dublin city center with trains from the capitol every hour.
