CARLOW COUNTY MUSEUM

Carlow County Museum is one of Ireland’s newest local museums, an award-winning tourist attraction housed in the former Presentation Convent on College Street, Carlow Town.

The museum provides a snapshot of the interesting heritage of Carlow, a county located within less than two hours’ drive of Dublin. On display is the well-known 19th century hand-carved pulpit of Carlow Cathedral—included in the Irish Times list, “A History of Ireland in 100 Objects” (a guide to the top 100 objects related to Irish history to view in museums and galleries around Ireland).

Also on display is the original gallows trapdoor from Carlow Gaol and the smoking pipe of Captain Myles Keogh, who was killed at the Battle of Little Bighorn in North America. Interesting exhibitions tell the story of the great 19th century scientist, John Tyndall—the first man to discover the greenhouse effect.

Carlow County Museum have unveiled their newest installation, ‘Carlow 1916 Commemorative Stained Glass Panel by Peadar Lamb’, which depicts a Carlow narrative on the 1916 Rising, featuring some of the key Carlow figures and the role they played in 1916.

Carlow County Museum (located in Carlow Town’s Cultural Quarter) is part of a complex that also houses a tourist office and the Carlow County Library and Archive, and makes for a fascinating outing for all ages in County Carlow.
