RECIPES TO PUT A SPRING IN OUR STEP FOR APRIL

This month, we have some fine recipes from Bord Bia, the Irish food board here in Ireland.  As its April, we thought a nice leg of Spring lamb would go down well as a nice recipe to put a spring in all our steps! Rhubarb has just come into season so I’ve included a rhubarb tart with whiskey cream recipe….And just before we say goodbye to the leeks a very nice simple potato and leek soup. I know, I never stop with the potatoes, what can I say!

JOKE OF THE MONTH

We got this great joke From Wendy Dellow so thank you Wendy!

So, we’re doing a call out for some jokes and we’ll include the best ones in the Celtic Times. Elaine loves a good joke so we have to send all the jokes on to Elaine 1st, as she knows all the best jokes herself!

So, keep them clean and send on to fanclubmembership@celticthunder.com

How do you get a one-armed Irishman out of a tree?

Wave to him!

ESCAPE TO KILLARNEY

People have been escaping to Killarney – in the ancient Kingdom of Kerry for over 250 years. They come for the legendary beauty: the lakes, waterfalls, mountain peaks and heart stopping views. And they come for the craic agus ceol: the good times and the banter, the pubs, live music, and easy Irish charm.

VALENTIA

Valentia, off the South West coast of Kerry, is an island of great beauty and contrast. It is joined to the mainland by bridge via the Portmagee Channel.

The western part of the island is dominated by the barren, dramatic cliffs of Bray Head which command spectacular views of the Kerry coastline while the mild effect of the Gulf Stream results in Valentia's balmy climate and lush, colorful vegetation.

TORC WATERFALL & MUCKROSS LAKE LOOPED WALK

Killarney National Park was established in 1932 to protect one of Ireland’s most precious natural habitats. Beneath the wild, rugged summits of the country’s highest mountains, it encloses a beautiful sylvan landscape of ancient woodland, spectacular waterfalls and quiet lakes.

THE SKELLIG ISLANDS

The Skellig Islands, Skellig Michael and Small Skellig, stand aloof in the Atlantic Ocean some 13km southwest of Valentia Island, County Kerry. From any angle, or from any vantage point on the nearby Ring of Kerry, they are spectacular pinnacles, which have magnetized viewers for generations.

THE BOG VILLAGE

The Bog Village gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy a step back in time to the early 18th century to recapture the way life would have been at that time. Peat, or turf as it is usually called in Ireland, is harvested from bogs and is still used as domestic fuel.

KENMARE TOWN

The elegant riverside town of Kenmare was founded in 1670 by Sir William Petty and is today a designated heritage town. You can trace the history of the town at the Kenmare Heritage Centre and learn about its tradition of lace making at the Lace Museum.

WATERVILLE

Waterville beach and promenade is located in south west Kerry, overlooking stunning Ballinskelligs Bay. The beach is ideal beach for surfing the waves and Beachcombing and is a good area for fishing. It has received the Green Coast Award for 2017, which recognizes beaches for their clean environment, excellent water quality and natural beauty.

WHERE TO EAT IN KENMARE

Kenmare would be a very well-known foody town in Kerry.  Its full of highly acclaimed and award winning restaurants and many would offer the best in locally sourced products.  We have included some restaurants worth checking out.

THE MOORINGS BED AND BREAKFAST - PORTMAGEE

Family run since 1958, Patricia and Gerard Kennedy took over The Bridge Bar in 1988, adding The Moorings Restaurant in 1994 with six rooms above. The Moorings Restaurant quickly obtained a reputation for fine dining specializing in fresh seafood landed at the local pier.

BEST BEACHES AROUND KERRY

The coastline in Kerry is stunning with some beautiful beaches for swimming, walking and water sports.  We have included a few highlights here.

KILLARNEY NATIONAL PARK

No visit to Kerry would be complete without a visit to Killarney National Park. South and west of the town of Killarney in County Kerry is an expanse of rugged mountainous country. This includes the McGillycuddy's Reeks, the highest mountain range in Ireland which rises to a height of over 1000 meters.

GLAMPING IN KILLARNEY

Killarney Glamping promise you not just a holiday but a unique experience that you will never forget.

COURTNEYS PUBLIC HOUSE, KILLARNEY

If you’re going to be in Killarney, a lovely pub worth checking out for a drink is Courtney’s.

Courtney's has been operating as a Public House since the late 1800s and remains in the ownership of Courtney family since that time. The classic and much photographed frontage is now protected whilst the bare wood interior retains the old-world atmosphere of the traditional “Teach Tairbhne”.

BONANE HERITAGE PARK

Bonane Heritage Park is located near Kenmare in south west Kerry on the Ring of Beara. The park is unique in that it has an abundance of well-preserved multi - period archaeological sites from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age right up to pre-Famine times. Sites include a stone circle, a ringfort, standing stones and a fulacht fiadh.
